The modern systems of transport and communication have now revolutionized the practice and meaning of business. merchant navy , which is the non-combatant commercial fleet transporting cargo from one destination to another around the globe by sea, offers a very lucrative career option for a persons who are sea-farers at heart .global trade is the backbone of merchant navy industry, which provides excellent packages and very rapid career growth.
it is the ships who handles 90% of world trade, in India this percentage is approximately 40-45% so we can imagine the number of people this sector can absorb right now and in future.
The work of ship can be classified in three ways
a] Navigation
b] Engineering
c] Communication

(a) Navigation :
Captain is the highest rank in navigation department , who's responsibility is to navigate the ship correctly and the loading and off-loading of the of ship along with it's crew is monitored by officers of this category.

(b) Engineering :
Efficient and smooth operation of the ship is the responsibility engineering department.they take care of engineering equipment such as electrical and refrigeration machineries. they are Marine engineers  .

(c) communication :
radio and wireless communication   installed on the ship is controlled by this department.which helps in keeping in touch with the shore .

The courses related to merchant navy should be approved by director-general of shipping, government of India.some of the pre-sea courses are listed below

  • a four year degree course leading to BE(marine) after 10+2.
  • The 2 and 1/2 year course leading to Alternate Training Scheme for marine engineers (ATS) after 10+2.
  • Degree course leading to BSc (nautical science) after 10+2.
As a result of tremendous demand for trained workforce in this sector , the salary structure is very high . in the domestic companies the starting salaries may vary from Rs 20,000 to 50,000 per  month. with the experience of 6-7 after completing degree course , you will move from Jr. Engineer to the post of Chief Engineer where salary is in the range of 2,50000- 300000 per month.same with the case of BSc (nautical science) where you will get opportunity to become Captain of the ship.
